Is a 2004/05 Dodge neon reliable for a lot of traveling and in general?

I’m buying my first car as I enter my second year in college. They look decent, get great gas mileage, and aren’t too expensive. However, I have heard there are some issues with reliability. Supposedly they break down a lot,are unsafe, and are expensive to maintain. I am 3.5 hours away from home and plan to visit once a month from college. Is this a good option for me, or should I go with the other two cars I am considering: 05 Hyundai Elantra or the 04 Pontiac Sunfire? or perhaps something else?

the neon is really a good little car regardless of what you hear about them,you,ll hear things about the sunfire also,but on the neon if you take good care of it they will last a long time,just make sure the car hasn’t been wrecked before and has a good clean car fax report on it and that it has no hidden problems,you can easily take it and have it checked before you buy it and be sure of what your buying, i can tell you this i own a 2001 model with well over two hundred thousand on it and it still runs really good and still doesn’t use any oil at all,the only problem i have had from it was transmissions,good luck.
