Knowing Much Information about Sleep and Parasomnias

Bed-witting, nightmares, sleep walking, night terrors and sleep paralysis are types of Parasomnias, which also belong to sleep disorders and they often disturb people’s normal sleep. Most parasomnias occur during arousals from REM sleep or partial arousals from Non-REM sleep.

Due to these kinds of behaviors and experiences occur usually while sleeping, and are most often infrequent and mild, many people don’t pare more attention on them, but actually, these involuntary actions may disrupt family life and cause considerable distress.

Now I will give you details about several main types of parasomnias.

Nightmare: In your dreams, have you experienced some vivid events that make you full of fear, terror, and anxiety? Nightmare is also called dream anxiety attacks and usually during REM sleep. When someone has nightmare, they will get tachycardia, tachypnea, diaphoresis, and arousal and find it is difficult to fall asleep again.

Sleep terrors: Sleep terrors are the most extreme and dramatic form of the arousal disorders and are the most distressing to witness. Night terrors last about 15 minutes, after which time the person usually lies down and appears to fall back asleep. People who have sleep terrors usually don’t remember the events the next morning.

Somnambulism: It is also called sleepwalking. Sleepwalking occurs when a person appears to be awake and moving around but is actually asleep. When people wake up, they often don’t know what happen. This disorder is most commonly seen in children aged eight to twelve; however, sleepwalking can occur among younger children, the elderly and adults.

Confusional arousals usually occur when a person is awakened from a deep sleep during the first part of the night. People experiencing confusional arousals react slowly to commands and may have trouble understanding questions that they are asked.

Sleep paralysis: Sleep paralysis is a transient inability to move or speak as one goes from sleep to wakefulness, without other findings characteristic of narcolepsy. People who have sleep paralysis may find they are lucidum but they cannot control their limbs to follow their mind’s commands.

REM sleep behavior disorder: People who have REM sleep behavior disorder acts out dramatic and/or violent dreams during REM sleep. Usually, RBD occurs in men aged 50 and older, but the disorder also can occur in women and in younger people.

Except for these six main types, there are also other types such as sleep enuresis, bruxism and restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movements. What you should do is consulting your doctor if they influence your sleep quality heavily and frequently.
